The city is located on the eastern bank of Lake Ferguson which is an oxbow lake left from an old channel of the Mississippi River. As per the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 27.7 square miles of which 26.9 square miles is of land and 0.8 square miles is of water.
The population was 41,633 at the 2000 census, of which 14,784 were households and 10,422 were families residing in the city. Greenville climate is hot during the summer when the temperature is high in 80s and cold during the winter when it is in its 40s. The warmest month of the year is July with an average maximum temperature of 92.60 degrees Fahrenheit. The coldest month is January with 33.00 degrees Fahrenheit.
