Laurel is a city located in Jones County in Mississippi. Located in the southeast of Mississippi, the city was founded in 1882 as a lumber town. Laurel is also the principal city of the Laurel Metropolitan Statistical Area.  There is also an American Indian reservation which is located in the nearby city, Sandersville.

As per the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 18,393 out of which there were 6,925 households and 4,542 were families residing in the city.  As per the United States Census, the city has a total area of 15.8 square miles of which, 15.4 square miles is land and 0.3 square miles is of cater. The total area of the city is 2.09 percent of water.

The average precipitation in January is 5.40 and in the month of July it is 10.10. This city is a city having moderate climate. The average minimum temperature of the city is 38.1 in the month of January and average minimum temperature is 70.3 in the month of July.
