Since the 1950s, the population of the city has been declining, and this decline has slowed after an annexation in 2006 and the influx of the displaced coastal residents after the 2005 Hurricane Katrina. The reason for the population decline lies in the city’s struggle to create a modern economy as per the new industries after the decline of the railroad industry.
