The city of Carthage was destroyed during the Civil war but was later rebuilt and includes several Victorian buildings build of local stone. The Jasper County Courthouse is one such structure. Battle of Carthage State Historic Site is a US Civil War site where the final war of 5th July 1861 took place. This twelve hour long war took place 9 miles to the north of the town. Historic Phelps House is a Victorian Manor built in 1895 with antique furniture and Victorian style architecture.
The Powers Museum
is a historical museum started in 1988 by Marian Powers Winchester which explains the past of the city with special reference to the Civil War. The Precious Moments Chapel is a religious site, designed by S.J. Butcher, with thirty stained glass windows and murals covering the ceilings and walls. It covers seventeen acres of land and includes a wishing fountain, a visitor’s center, an art museum and a Wedding Island surrounded by a huge forty acre lake.
