The Christ Church Cathedral in Saint Louis, Missouri has a religious and historical legacy dating back almost 200 years. Located at Thirteenth and Locust Street, this Episcopal congregation finds its roots among the efforts of 26 individuals who assembled in an old public hall for worship. The structure has since evolved into a 500-seat parish with inspiring architecture and design. The moving interior features 14th century Early English Gothic style, renowned stained glass work and an Aeolian-Skinner organ. The centerpiece of the church, however, is its reredos, the decorative arrangement behind the altar. Rising 35 feet, this reredos is carved from cream stone and depicts 52 religious figures and scenes from the bible.
The Christ Cathedral church also boasts the largest bell in the state of Missouri, weighing an enormous 5,732 pounds. The church hangs banners inside of the many congregations of the Episcopal Diocese so as to welcome all in a sense of unity and community.
