It’s the towering geometric structure that has become the identifying icon of the entire city of Saint Louis, Missouri—the Gateway Arch. Standing at an impressive 630 feet, this monument holds the title as the tallest monument in the United States and weighs a colossal 17,246 tons.  The structure was built in 1963 as a tribute to the western expansion of the United States and fittingly bears the nickname “Gateway to the West.” It stands on Memorial Drive in Saint Louis as the focal point of the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial, towering over the churning Mississippi River near the Museum of Western Expansion and the Old Courthouse.

The arch is one of the most popular attractions in Missouri, welcoming over one million visitors a year on its elevator tram that rides to the very top of the arch. In this observation deck, visitors experience an unparalleled view over the Mississippi River, the city of Saint Louis and southern Illinois; on a clear day, the sightline can extend an incredible 30 miles. The arch is sometimes illuminated for special events, its stainless steel shimmering beneath the glow of pigmented flood lights shining up at it in the night sky. The general aesthetics and visual awe of the remarkable structure make it a must-see attraction in Saint Louis. For information, call 877 982-1410.
