From Cherokee Street to Meramec Street south of downtown Saint Louis is the historic neighborhood of Marine Villa that dates back over 150 years into Missouri’s history. Just south of the notorious Anheuser-Busch Brewery, Marine Villa attracted many German immigrants in the 1860s who moved to the area to work for one of the nearby breweries. The age and historical richness of the town are still reflected by the architecture of homes and buildings. Some of the oldest buildings are small farm houses, and almost all of the buildings are constructed of brick. The architecture styles of the many single-family homes reflect the ages in which they were built—mostly the late 18th and early 19th centuries—including Second Empire, Queen Anne, Italianate, Craftsman and other local styles.
When the population in Marine Villa exploded about 100 years ago with the introduction of the neighborhood’s streetcar, the area began to grow and thrive. It has since developed into a tight knit and flourishing community based on unity and mutual advancement of its citizens and businesses. The community participates in many social and environmental projects focused on improving the quality of living in all respects. Such efforts create the perfect opportunity to raise a family in a nurturing and historically rich environment.
