When one considers the types of historical sites in the United States, movie theaters don’t generally come to mind. Saint Louis, however, is home to the historic and beloved Tivoli Theatre that is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Built in 1924, this ornate theater used to host speeches, “photoplays,” orchestra performances and vaudeville acts. During that time period, it was considered a premier theater venue, but thereafter deteriorated during various changes in ownership, finally closing in 1994. It has since been reopened and restored to its original glory, and features showings of independent films and documentaries that can’t be seen at most cinemas.
Inside the theater are a remarkable 29-foot tall marquee, detailed ceilings and elegant displays featuring classic movie memorabilia. Traditional crimson velvet carpets and curtains line the floor and walls and intricate architecture enhances the interior, creating a richness atypical of modern movie theaters. The theater isn’t strictly traditional, however, offering modern amenities such as a concession stand, desserts, and alcoholic beverages.
