Monument Valley, or Valley of the Rocks as it is locally known, is a Navajo Nation Tribal Park that lies in the Colorado Plateau, USA. It is situated in the Great Basin Desert and spans the borders of south-eastern Utah and north-eastern Arizona.
To get to Monument Valley, guests can use the airport at Page city which is 170 km to the west. The Amtrak train service is available in Thompson.
At an elevation of nearly 1600 m, the valley experiences warm summers (with temperatures in the thirties), while winters can be very cold with temperatures falling below 0°C.
Monument Valley attracts more than one million tourists on average each year. The valley has a dominating bright red colour which comes from the iron oxide in the siltstone. The blue-grey colour of certain rocks comes from manganese oxide.
