Beatrice is situated in Gage County, Nebraska. As per the census in 2000, the population was 12,496. Most widely accepted pronunciation for Beatrice is “Bee-AT-ris”, not “BEE-atris” as the name is usually pronounced. It is located at 40° 16’ 6” N 96° 44’ 35” W. The city has a total area of 7.5 square miles. Beatrice has a rich agricultural country surrounding the region. It was incorporated as a town in 1871 and became a city two years later. The racial sections in Beatrice are White, African American, Native American, Asian, Pacific Islander, Hispanic and other races. Beatrice State Developmental Center founded in 1887 for Feeble-Minded Youth is located on the eastern side of the town. Beatrice is the origin of The West Side Baptist Church Explosion on the surface, which appears to be a well-told urban legend. In Beatrice, Dr. Brewster was the first physician in the world to use an airplane for medical life.
