The name ‘Kearney’ has been obtained from ‘Fort Kearney’, i.e. an outpost relating to ‘United States Army’ along Oregon Trail during mid-19th century; which itself had been named after Colonel and later ‘General Stephen W.
Kearny’. It needs to be noted that ‘e’ was added by postmen ‘by mistake’ who never spelt out the name of the city in a correct manner.

An interesting fact about Kearney is that every year it gains around thousands of residents. This had led to the development of construction market since the last few years.

The population of Kearney as per 2000 census was 10549.
