Visitors to Elko will find it an excellent stepping-off point for multitudes of outdoor adventures in the surrounding countryside. Elko is well known for its annual Cowboy Poetry Gathering, taking place during January every year, which draws thousands of visitors here.
People get together in a sort of celebration of folk culture, telling stories around campfires, singing about the lonesome life on the ranch, and keeping alive the dying traditions and tales of the Wild West. During the 72-hour party of the National Basque Festival, each Fourth of July, on a weekend, hulking men throw huge logs at each other amid a whole lot of carousing and downing platefuls of Basque food.
Elko has all the qualities of a booming town. Housing is difficult to find in the inner-core of Elko, especially on a Friday and Saturday night, as it bustles with activity with the miners and ranchers from outside of town descending into Elko for a night out.
To the south of Elko lies the beautiful and rugged Ruby Mountains and the scenic Lamoille Canyon.
