The state has the highest percentage of people with French and Canadian ancestry in the US. Most of the land is inhabited by the Yankees. The Irish and Italian Americans are mostly descendants of the mill workers of New Hampshire.

The Canterbury Shaker Village near Concord is an outdoor history museum featuring 25 Shaker buildings. Fort no. 4 has 13 reconstructed buildings and recreates the scene of the French and Indian wars of the 1740s–1760s. Other attractions include the Stark Covered Bridge across the Little Ammonoosuc River and Rockingham Park. The Stonehenge at Salem is considered to be America’s oldest man-made structure dating back at least 4,000 years and housing prehistoric artefacts. Also visit the nondenominational Cathedral of the Pines and the Cannon Mountain Aerial Tramway.

The New Hampshire International Speedway is home to NASCAR events, the Loudon Classic and the Bike Week motorcycle rally. The state is also home to SoulFest (New England’s largest music festival), the New Hampshire Highland Games at Contoocook in September (a premier Scottish culture fest with bagpipes and dancers) and the Summer Fest on the banks of the Ammonoosuc River in late May.
