Bernardsville is located in the northern part of Somerset County with Morristown to the north and Somerville to the south. Known for its equestrian farms, historical mansions and recreational facilities, it was originally the Vealtown section of Bernards Township. During the 1700s many Scottish, Irish, English and German settlers arrived in the area. Bernardsville was incorporated as a borough by an act of the New Jersey Legislature on 6th March 1924, from portions of Bernards Township, based on the results of a referendum held on April 29, 1924. Bernardsville is located at (40.718800,-74.577675). According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 12.9 square miles of which, 12.9 square miles of it is land and 0.08% is water. As per the census of 2000, there were 7,345 people, 2,723 households, and 2,050 families residing in the borough. The population density was 568.1 people per square mile. There were 2,807 housing units with an average density of 217.1/sq mi.
