As per the United States 2000 census, the township had a total population of 97,687 making it the fifth largest municipality in New Jersey. Currently Edison is one of the fastest growing towns in New Jersey and is primarily a middle class and upper middle class community with more than 75 communities represented. As per the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 30.7 square miles of which 30.1 square miles is of land and 0.6 square miles is water.
