Hamilton Township is situated in Mercer County in New Jersey.  It is located next to Trenton city, which is the capital of New Jersey. Hamilton was incorporated as a township in 1842. It derives its name from the village of Hamilton Square, which was named after Alexander Hamilton.

As per the United States Census of 2000, the population of the township was 87,109. As per 2009, Hamilton Township population is 90,365.

As per the US Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 40.4 square miles, out of which 0.9 square miles is water and 39.5 square miles is land.
