Lady Liberty herself watches over Liberty State Park in Jersey City, New Jersey. Located on Morris Pesin Drive, this enormous park provides one of the most coveted views of the Manhattan skyline, not to mention a close-up glimpse of the Statue of Liberty. For tourists who don’t want to make the actual trip to the statue, as well as the trip over to Ellis Island, a trip to Liberty State Park is just as good as the real thing. If you do decide you want to head over to the Statue or Ellis Island, you can catch the ferry from the park, so it is convenient as well.
The enormous park covers an impressive 1,212 acres of land, across which are various paths and walkways perfect for biking, jogging and peaceful strolls to enjoy the scenery. There are also scenic overlooks to enjoy the panoramic vision before you, various picnic and barbecue facilities and a playground. There is also a Holocaust memorial called Liberation and a picturesque 9/11 memorial called Empty Sky for visitors to enjoy.
At the entrance of the park is the Liberty Science Center, a science museum and learning complex that features the world’s largest IMAX theater, the original Hoberman sphere and interactive exhibits and resources. Liberty State Park has so much to offer beyond its incredible view of the Hudson’s riches and beyond. For information, call (201) 915-3409.
