Fort William Henry Museum in Lake George

While the movie The Last of the Mohicans presents a compelling depiction of the battle at Fort William Henry, there’s nothing comparable to walking on the actual grounds of the historical battle site through the past of soldiers and Native Americans long passed. Located at 48 Canada Street in Lake George, New York, the Fort William Henry Museum is a preservation of history nestled into an urban area. It chronicles the legacy of the French & Indian War in a way that is both intriguing and interactive. Costumed characters make the museum the education oasis that it is, providing guided tours, musket loading and firing demonstrations, cannon demonstrations and lead-melting demonstrations. Following the tour, kids are invited to join the “King’s Army” and given a uniform and musket and the opportunity to drill with their tour guide; afterward, they are “certified” as soldiers.

Other activities suited for children are Native American crafts like leatherwork and beading.
