New Dorp is an ocean-front town in Staten Island, New York with settlements dating all the way back to 1671. Throughout its development, this area prospered as a resort, campgrounds and seasonal cottages began to pop up, turning New Dorp into the community it is today. The scenic waterfront is lined with 10-foot dunes, wooden piers and summer bungalows. The quaint village was dubbed by the New York Magazine The Village Voice as “The Poor Man’s Bermuda,” meaning it was a beautiful getaway that was readily accessible, no matter what your financial situation was. The streets of New Dorp are winding walking paths ideal for breezy bike rides and summer strolls. The neighborhood is home to Miller Field as well as Dugan Park. New Dorp has a predominant Italian and Irish population, with a variety of other cultures mixed in. The shoreline of the beach retains remnants of urban life, like rocks graffitied to mimic city living. Even steps away from the churning ocean, it can sometimes be difficult to forget New York City at your back, even at New Dorp Beach.
