This island was the national central immigration station and was in operation until 1954.

Thirty years later the main building on the island was renovated and opened as a museum in 1990.

The famous national monument of the Statue of Liberty is situated in the Liberty state park which can be reached from Ellis Island via a bridge.

The American Family Immigration History Centre situated here displays the story of several immigrants, crew members and passengers who entered the harbour in New York from 1892 to 1924.

There are several development plans going on to restore the rest of the thirty deteriorating buildings of Ellis Island.

Ellis Island, located at the mouth of the Hudson River, is also known as ‘The Island of tears’ or ‘Heartbreak Island’.
