The Lower East Side Tenement Museum is situated in a historic residential area. It is also called the Tenement Building at 97 Orchard Street, due to its location.
This building previously served as an apartment for more than 7,000 people from 20 different nations in the period from 1863 to 1935. Now the apartment building or tenement is converted into a well preserved museum.
The museum exhibits the history of these immigrants and their lifestyle at that time.
The tenement has 6 floors.
Lukas Glockner opened this structure for the immigrants who lived here. The building underwent several modifications and changes over the period from 1863 to 1935.
Later on, instead of modifying this building further, the residents were asked to vacate the building.
Visitors can see the lay out of rooms, plumbing, wallpaper and other things that belonged to the residents. One can get a clear idea of the lifestyle of the residents in the 1980s.
