Union square, rich with some of the best boutiques and restaurants of Manhattan, was designed in the nineteenth century. It is home to the well known Greenmarket. Its active market offers everything from handmade ornaments to designer handbags. The square has been a venue for political rallies in history. It also hosted candlelight vigils as a tribute to the September 11 victims.
