Port Jervis free library or Carnegie library came to existence with the creation of Port Jervis literary association in 1865. The purpose of the association was to provide a reading place for the common man. With this aim the library was organized in August 1892, the first in New York under the free library law of 1892.The library was the first library to have a separate children’s reading room and has been a leader in the state in acquiring new books and facilities.
