Poughkeepsie city is located in the Hudson River Valley. The meaning of the word Poughkeepsie is “the reed covered lodge by the little-water place”, which refers to a stream or spring feeding into the Hudson River.

Poughkeepsie city includes all of the Dutches and Orange Countries. It has a total population of 621517 as per the 2000 census. The site of Poughkeepsie was settled prior to 1659 by the Dutchman, Barent Baltus.

has become the second capital of New York. It is in the Western part of Dutchess Country.

The total area is 14.8 km2, out of which 13.3 km2 is land and 1.4 km2 is water. Poughkeepsie receives about 44.12 inches of rain per year during the late spring and early summer.
