Suffern is a village located in the town of Ramapo situated in Rockland County, New York. . To the south of the village is the state of New Jersey and to the north is Montebello. It is one of the most urban communities in Rockland County.Geographically, the village is located at 41°6’43” north and 74°8’45” west. The village has a total area of 2.1 square miles and rises about 312 ft from the sea level.The village supports a total population of 11,006 with a population density of 2,033/km2. As of 2000 census 4,634 households and 2,836 families resided in the village. The majority of the village population belongs to the White origin (86.83%25) followed by Afro Americans (3.53%25) and a small percentage of mixed races.Suffern was founded in 1796 by the first judge of Rockland county John Suffern to whom the village owes its name. Originally the village of Suffern was known as new Antrim after Suffern’s hometown in Ireland.
