When a person named ‘Jim Morton’ put some grass before a ‘woolly worm’, he had not anticipated that such a ‘fuzzy critter’ at feet of his would turn out in to a festival drawing around 20000 people, 1000 worm trainers, 150 vendors, and various national media crews towards banner Elk. In the year 1973, the first Woolly Worm Festival was held; of which Morton was one of the founders. It was then that he got to know about role of woolly worm in ‘local folklore’. A person serving at ‘Grandfather Mountain’ informed Morton about the use of woolly worms in forecasting winter.
