Franklin is an incorporated town which is located in Franklin Township and situated within the Nantahala National Forest in Macon County. Franklin is the county seat of Macon County. Franklin and North Carolina area are rich in gems and minerals and so these are known as the “Gem Capital of the World”.

As per the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 3,490, out of which there were 1,627 households and 899 families which were residing in the town. As per the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 3.9 square miles, of which, 3.8 square miles is of land and 0.04 square miles is of water.

The Cullasaja River which flow from the Highlands flows into the Little Tennessee River in Franklin. In Franklin, the coldest month was in the 30s and summer rises up to 70s. The annual average precipitation at Franklin is 54.47 inches. Rainfall is fairly distributed throughout the year. The wettest month is March with an average of 5.76 inches of rain.
