As the 2nd largest city in Metropolitan Statistical Area, this city has experienced steady growth with a population change during the 1990s. As per the 2000 census, the population of the city was 66,277, wherein 35 percent of the population was of Gaston County. Out of this 66,277 people, there were 25,945 households and 17,720 families residing in the city.
