Gastonia is famous for its surrounding areas which are home to a number of notable cultural centers. The Schiele Museum of Natural History is located to the east side of the downtown on Garrison Boulevard. The main branch of the Gaston Lincoln Regional Library System is directly across the street from the Schiele Museum.

Then, there is the Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden which is to the southeast of the city on NC 279. There is the US National Whitewater Center which is to the east of the city in the neighboring Mecklenburg County. The Southpark Mall is 45 minutes away from this center.

Gastonia is known for its abundance of churches like the Methodist and Baptist related churches. The Crowders Mountain State Park is also another must see places. One can also with the Westfield Eastridge regional mall and is home to over 100 specialty stores. There is also the Franklin Square which is other one of the city’s premier shopping centers.
