Rocky Mount or “city of rise” or “rock city” is an all American award winning city of North Carolina State. It is shared by two counties; Edgecombe county and Nash county. It lies in the North Carolina statistical metropolitan area and is also a part of the combined statistical area.The city of Rocky Mount rises about 100 ft above the sea level and has geographical coordinates located at 35 56’16” north and 77 47’26” west. The city covers a total area of 35.8 square miles out which 35.6 square miles is land and rest 0.2 sq miles is water.The city has a total population of 56,844 with a population density of 1,571.4 per square mile as of 2007. The city supports 21,435 households and 14,682 families.The majority of the city population belongs to the Afro American origin (56.02%25) followed by Whites (40.92%25) and a few percentage of mixed races.The city of Rocky Mount was established in the early 19th century but was documented when the first post office was opened at the fall of the Tar River on March 22, 1816.
