Winston-Salem is the 5th largest city of North Carolina in the United States with a population of 441,607.
In 1889, the US Post Office Department combined the mail offices for the two towns, and the towns were officially joined as "Winston-Salem" in 1913.
Due to its dual heritage, it is often referred to as the "Twin City". It is partially protected by the mountain ranges from the cold air that moves southeastward across the central States.
During an average winter, the temperature in central North Carolina is warmer than the coast. There is no pronounced wet or dry season while rainfall varies throughout the year.
Showers and thunderstorms are common and autumn is the driest season.
The city is home to one of the tallest office buildings in the region, the Wachovia Center.
Winston-Salem is locally renowned for its drinking water, which is ranked among the top 10 cleanest in the state.
