Ashtabula is a city in Ashtabula County, Ohio, United States. The name Ashtabula means “river of many fish” in the Iroquois language. Ashtabula was founded in 1803 and incorporated in 1891. The city contains several former stops on the Underground Railroad which was used to convey African- American slaves to freedom in Canada in the years before the American Civil War. According to the U.S Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 7.7 square miles of which, 7.6 square miles of it is land and 0.2 square miles of it is water.
As of the Census of 2000, there were 20,962 people, 8,435 households and 5,423 families, residing in the city. Population was below the poverty line. On an average, there are 160 sunny days per year in Ashtabula, in Ohio. The July high is around 81 degrees. The January low is 18. The comfort index, which is based on humidity during the hot months, is a 50 out of 100, where higher is more comfortable.
