Portsmouth city is situated in Ohio and is the county seat of Scioto County. Its roots can be traced in 1790s, when the small town of Alexandria was founded to the west where the city is at present.
As per the 2000 census, the population of the city was 20,909 people. In 2009, it estimated to 20,133 people.
Even if this city was on higher ground, it was prone to flooding, which it witnessed in 1884, 1933 and 1937. It is a midway between four cities which are Columbus, Cincinnati, Lexington and Charleston. All of these cities are ninety miles away. Most of the terrain is hilly due to dissected plateau around it.
Its total area is 11.1 square miles, of which 10.8 square miles is land and 0.3 square miles is water.
Portsmouth experiences 41 inches of rainfall and 14 inches of snowfall each year. The number of days having measurable precipitation is 125 days. July is high with 87 degrees and January is low with 24 degrees.
