The Portsmouth Public Library has served the city since it opened in 1879. However, its traces of a public library began in 1831, when a small library opened at the corner of the Market and Front Streets, which soon got closed. Due to the initiative of the Portsmouth City Schools Board of Education donation of a building for the library, the library opened again.
