Alva city is situated in Woods County along the Salt Fork Arkansas River. It is the county seat of the Woods County. According to the 2000 census, the population of the city was 5,288. As per the 2000 official census figures, the city lost 200 people between 1990 and 2000.
Alva city was established as a land office in the year 1893 for the Cherokee Outlet land run, which was the largest of the land rushes which settled western and central Oklahoma. It is said that the area was first named after Alva Adams, who was a railroad attorney. Later on, he became the Colorado governor.
