The city of Shawnee is the seat of Pottawatomie County in Oklahoma, USA. Located on the North Canadian River, it covers an area of 115.7 sq km.

After the city’s establishment in 1894, its progress was fuelled by the railways. Virtually cupped on three sides by railroad tracks, Shawnee developed its commercial activity around Main Street. Even though the city suffered during the depression, it picked up pace during World War II and the Oklahoma oil boom.

The town has a population of around 30,000, and is a transport and commercial centre. It is the seat of Oklahoma Baptist University and St Gregory’s College.
