Opelika is the county seat of Lee County in Alabama. It is situated in the north-central region of Lee County and covers an area of 138.4 sq km, of which 1.7 sq km is water.
Opelika is located near the Chattahoochee River and sits at the southern end of the Piedmont Plateau. It is 822 feet above sea level and enjoys a mild weather for most of the year.
Opelika has a population of around 23,500. After the removal of the natives by the white settlers, the area was named as ‘Opelika’, meaning ‘large swamp’ in the Muskogee language.
Opelika rapidly developed into a commerce hub after the introduction of the railroad.
It is home to the Grand National Golf Course which has been rated as the top most area for golf in the United States by Golf Digest. History lovers can walk into the Historic Railway Avenue or the Museum of East Alabama or enjoy the scenic beauty at the Lee County Courthouse Square.
