Located along the Columbia River, the city of Hood River is situated in Oregon, USA and covers an area of 7.5 sq km. It lies to the north of Mount Hood in the Columbia River Gorge and is a part of the Gorge National Scenic Area.
Hood River enjoys a moderate climate. Due to the moderating effect of the Pacific Ocean, the temperatures are not extreme. The average summer temperature is 25°C, while in winter the temperature is around 5°C.
Named after the nearby river, the city was incorporated in 1895. It grew after the introduction of the railroad in the city. Even though fruit production and timber are the major contributors to the economy, the city, with a population of around 4,500, is slowly becoming an industrial centre.
The steady winds from the gorge create some of the best wind surfing conditions in the city.
Hood River also offers scenic views of the adjacent Mount Hood and the Columbia River.
