Located along the Glenn Highway in the centre of the Matanuska Valley of south-central Alaska, between the Chugah and Talkeetna Mountain ranges, Palmer covers an area of 9.7 sq km.
The town was established when some families were transplanted in 1935 as part of President Franklin Roosevelt’s New Deal Relief Program. It eventually grew into a strong farming community and now has a population of over 5,000.
The weather in summer is very pleasant. The average temperature in summer is 23°C and in winter around –12°C.
It has many glaciers and is lined with rugged mountains. The Matanuska Glacier offers the most beautiful sight in Palmer. It is also famous for the annual Alaska State Fair where farmers display large vegetables.
Palmer is one of the few cities that have retained its historic character while realizing the need to grow.
