Pelican is a lively town on the north-western coast of Lisianski Inlet, which is a part of the Chichagof Island in Alaska, USA. The inlet has steep shores and is bordered by rugged mountains that rise as high as 900 m.
Summers have long days and temperatures range between 15°C–25°C. The town experiences typical Alaskan winters with freezing nights being common.
Pelican is 160 km west of Juneau (the state capital) and 145 km north of Sitka. Daily air taxi services are available from both cities. Pelican also has a seaplane and floatplane base, with the State Ferry providing additional facilities.
Founded in 1938, the town is one of south-east Alaska’s most scenic spots. It has a population of hardly 160 people according to the last census. Commercial fishing continues to be a major activity of the economy.
