Category: Monument and Historic Building
Address: 1420 Locust Street, Philadelphia

An amazing crystal chandelier measuring 5000 pounds and 50 centimeters in circumference is an impressive work of art that hangs over the inside theatre at the Academy of Music, the oldest opera house in the United States dating back to 1857.  While the outside of the building has a modest brick exterior, don’t be fooled.  Once inside, the opulent décor is nothing but modest and includes velvet cushions and beautiful art deco lighting.  An open horseshoe shape design offers optimum sight lines for guests.  Look up not only at the glowing chandelier, but check out the proscenium arch that features the bust of Mozart in bas-relief.  The Philadelphia Orchestra, the Pennsylvania Ballet, the Opera Company of Philadelphia, and the Philly Pops with Peter Nero have graced the stage.  Presidents Ulysses S. Grant, Richard Nixon and Grover Cleveland are among the famous visitors to the Academy of Music.
