The Eastern State Penitentiary opened in 1829 as a part of a controversial movement in order to change the behavior of the inmates through the confinement in solitude with labor. It instantly became one of the most expensive and copied buildings in United States. It is estimated that more than 300 prisons is the world are based on the Penitentiary’s wagon wheel. After 142 years of use, this prison was abandoned in 1971 and at present stands as a lost world of crumbling cellblocks and empty guard towers.
