Philadelphia Monuments and Historic Buildings: Memorial Hall

Memorial Hall

Memorial Hall is literally a glowing symbol and the only remaining building from the United States Centennial Celebration in 1876.  An high iron-and-glass copper dome tops the hall and shines for miles.  Inside is the historically-significant 150-foot “Great Hall” where U.S. President Ulysses S. Grant opened the Centennial festivities.

Visit a grand exhibit of a scale model (also inside) of the Centennial Exposition fairgrounds where the first United States World’s Fair was held.

The child-oriented “Please Touch Museum” is another “must see on the tour of Memorial Hall.  The exhibit includes a fully-refurbished carousel from the early 1900s that is open for rides and various realistic “career-themed” interactive games.

The recognizable historic landmark Memorial Hall built in the late 1800s is located in Fairmount Park and is a beautiful example of Beaux-Arts architecture.

 Admission is free.
