Printing plates once used by President George Washington, artifacts from President Benjamin Franklin and a Free Mason’s apron are among the fascinating details featured at The Masonic Temple Museum located across the street from the Philadelphia City Hall.
The Masonic Temple, built in the late 1800s is the gathering place for its members and a museum for visitors to explore the history of the Masons of Pennsylvania. A 45-minute educational tour features elaborately-decorated stylized theme rooms including among others the ceremonial Egyptian and Roman-themed rooms.
The temple also houses the largest collection of Masonic literature in the United States. But don’t expect to learn the secret handshake or code words while touring, that is, unless you’re a member of the Free Masons. Admission is $8 for adult, $6 for seniors, $5 for students and includes a choice of 3 tours each day Tuesday through Friday at 11, 2 and 3 and additional tours at 10 and 11 on Saturdays (except during July and August when they are closed on Saturdays).
