Both the exterior and the interior of the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts could easily be considered masterpieces onto themselves alone. Designed by Frank Furness, the exterior is a work of art in itself with its lavish ornamental Gothic details. Inside the structure of the museum and school are permanent and rotating world-class exhibitions of the finest in paintings and sculptures, representing all the great American artists of the 19th and 20th centuries including Mary Cassat, an artist known for her emotive depictions of women on canvas, who was a student herself at the school when she was only 15 years old. Known for being the oldest art museum and school in the United States, it was recognized by President George W. Bush when he awarded the National Medal of Arts to the Academy for its unwavering commitment to fine arts education. Museum hours are Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
