The John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge at Tinicum is administered by the Department of Interior’s US Fish and Wildlife Service. It was established by an act which was passed by the Congress in 1972 in order to protect the last 200 acres of freshwater tidal marsh in Pennsylvania. The Refuge provides access to the Cusano Environmental Education Center and for activities like fishing, foot trails and wildlife observation platform. It has 1200 acres of varied habitats, with more than 280 bird species and wild animals.
