Raleigh’s foremost attraction consists of the Modercai Historic Park, a 200-year-old plantation house, which also happens to be former President Andrew Johnson’s birthplace. Visit the oldest Federal-style house, Haywood Hall, and the State Capitol, built in the Greek revival style.
Referred to as ‘the Smithsonian of the South’, Raleigh is home to several museums. It has three state museums, of which the North Carolina Museum of History depicts the colourful past of the state and the capital. The North Carolina Museum of Art boasts of a vast collection of art spanning 5,000 years. The North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences, along with many exhibits, houses the only Acrocanthosaurus dinosaur fossil in existence.
Raleigh hosts a number of festivals, most popular being the Artsplosure Jazz and Art Festival and the North Carolina State Fair, which features craft demonstrations, games, concerts and food.
