Tourist Guide Newport
Newport, a city in the Newport County, is situated in Rhode Island, United States. Seat of the Newport County, the city is home to the United States Navy Training Centre. With a population of around 26,400 inhabitants, the city also houses the United States Naval War College.
Newport has a moist, continental climate, characterised by four distinct seasons. January and February are the coldest months; the weather is constantly maintained by sea winds.
Founded in 1639 by William Coddington, Newport grew to become the most important ports in Rhode Island. The city witnessed major pirate activity during the seventeenth and the eighteenth centuries. The city also served as a slave trade centre during the colonial period.
Fishing and the tourism industries account for a portion of the annual economy of the city of Newport.Explore map
