Cabrillo National Monument is a site of historical significance, and it has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This monument has been dedicated to Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo who was the first European to land on the West Coast of America. A 14-feet-tall sandstone statue of Cabrillo made by the famous sculptor Alvaro de Bree has been placed here to commemorate his landing in the year 1542. The Visitors Centre is a good place to begin the trip with; other sites worth visiting are the Old Point Loma Lighthouse and the museum. The monument is also home to around 200 species of birds and a variety of marine plants and animals. Events such as Kumeyaay and the Cabrillo Festival Open House which is held annually in October are worth being a part of. |
