The small coastal town of Seward is situated on Resurrection Bay at the foot of Mount Marathon on the southeast coast of the Kenai Peninsula in Alaska, USA. Spread over an area of 55.8 sq km, the city is made up of snow-covered mountains lined with greenery.
It has a maritime climate with winter temperatures ranging from –8°C to 3°C and summer temperatures varying from 9°C to 17°C. It receives little rain and abundant snowfall and is also blessed with a clear sky for most parts of the year.
Named after William Seward who negotiated the purchase of Alaska from the Russians, this ice-free port was a terminus for the construction of the Alaska Railroad in 1903.
Its population is over 3,000 with around 15% of the population consisting of Alaska Natives. Shipping, fishing and tourism provide the base for the economy and it acts as the gateway to the Kenai Fjords National Park.
